The real truth is that there is nothing practical about sailing whatsoever. That’s the whole point. Sailing is sublimely pointless, magnificently impractical, and I am the very living embodiment of that. I am THE IMPRACTICAL BOAT OWNER. I bought my first boat, a 1970s Sailfish 18 called Marlin, in 2004 and since then I’ve floundered around the east-coast and beyond without dying once. If I can do it anyone can. Since 2005 I’ve been chronicling my adventures every month in Practical Boat Owner, and along the way I’ve found that sailing has transformed my life in many wonderful ways. These days I simply want to share everything that sailing has to give, the pleasure, pain, fun, laughter, grief and joy….
